Episode 6: Doing it all
Add bookmarkEpisode 6: ‘Doing it all!’ – Sharon Mirabelle on running the “Global Enablement Group” at McCormick
How often do you get to hear from a true corporate veteran who’s achieved phenomenal success within their niche? Meet Sharon Mirabelle, VP Shared Services at McCormick – everyone’s favorite spice company and on DiversityInc’s Top 50 list in 2018 – a true PIONEER of Shared Services.
In 2001, Sharon was offered the opportunity to stand up a Shared Services, at a time when, as she tells Deborah Kops, “No one knew what Shared Services was, it didn't feature in the org chart, its brand was unknown, and is benefits relatively untested."
Instead, Sharon had to write her own playbook and learn the hard way.
In this HARDtalk interview, recorded against the bustling background of Shared Services and Outsourcing Week North America, we are offered a rare insight into what makes a career, what potentially breaks it, and how to survive what was then (and still is, to many) a new world of services delivery.
Today, the group has been renamed Global Enablement Group, to differentiate itself from the service mentality of the past, is on the CEO’s top five list, and everything is moving "much, much faster".
As a career, Sharon says, she could not have imagined a better move than taking on the challenge in 2001; and yet, her first thought at the time was, "I guess I won’t make VP of Finance!"
Instead, Sharon went on to run her own business (within a business) with the incredible breadth of learnings that go with that. "What I've really loved is doing it all – root cause analysis, process improvement, talent management, relationship management … You have to truly embrace the power of the people to understand shared services," she says.
